Against the Stream is the captivating and unsolved story of a true individual who lived his life unreservedly, without fear of judgment from others. Ralph Leonard’s unique perspective on his brother’s life and disappearance, along with the mere facts themselves, make this book the gripping read it is. It appeals to seafarers and land lovers alike, as we can all learn something from Don’s innate freedom and life force.
Against the Stream is the biography of Don Leonard, a man whose adventurous and free spirit led him through many years of sea life, which included diving, beautiful women, and broadminded friends. He spent much of his life traveling the Gulf Stream and the surrounding waters, a voyager whose primary purpose was to live in the moment. Sometimes his short-term thinking got him into trouble, as when he transported dubious cargo for a group of nameless South Americans. But he was not afraid of a little risk, even if it led to danger.
Against the Stream is authored by Don Leonard’s brother, Ralph, who shares with us his intimate knowledge of Don’s lifetime travails and passions. "[Don] sought to stay free and unencumbered by the baggage that keeps most of us at the station," the author writes, his admiration for Don’s chosen way of life apparent. But Ralph Leonard cannot shy away from the truth, that Don’s lifestyle led to his ultimate disappearance in 1993, when his small boat was found abandoned and adrift off the coast of Florida.
With a detective’s voice, the author explores the facts in the mystery surrounding Don’s story: "There was no sign of foul play or traces of blood. The boat was undamaged, which would seem to rule out the possibility of a collision at sea. A bizarre find the next day did little to clear up the mystery. A diver found a blue duffle bag containing Don’s passport, a tee shirt, and the case for his glasses."
