High Water follows the adventures of two seventh-grade girls as they struggle to survive middle school, the wilderness, and each other.
This is a thoughtful story that explores mature themes — acceptance, valuing differences, understanding what’s really important — without including explicit content. These underlying messages are deftly woven into the exciting and very believable story of two classmates who, although far from friends, find themselves stranded in a rugged Sierra wilderness on their class rafting trip, and dependent upon each other for survival. Ideal summer reading for 10 to 14-year-old (5th-8th grade) girls.
Author Amy Tiemann has enjoyed an eclectic career, ranging from lab neuroscientist at Stanford University, to high school science teacher, to stay-at-home-Mom. In 2002, Tiemann founded SPARK Seminars (www.sparkseminars.com) to educate parents about the core concepts of child safety and self-defense. She is currently working on her next book, Mojo Mom: Nurturing Your Self While Raising a Family, which deals with the challenges all new mothers face as they struggle to recreate an individual identity separate from that of being a mother. |
