Ladd/Paddock Family: A Perspective is about ordinary people. In part, it is the
story of the first Americans, who willingly committed their pioneering spirits
and their abilities to our country's development in the seventeenth century.
The second, third, and succeeding generations of Ladds and Paddocks in America
were likewise dedicated to the country's survival and success.
The family had its characters. Some were strong and domineering, some eccentric,
and many uniquely talented. John, the devoted Quaker and first Ladd in America,
was undoubtedly a brave and hardy soul to have overcome the deprivations of his
time. There was never a more steadfast and determined wife and mother than Helen
Harvey (Tiffany) Paddock, who watched her husband argue lawsuits in partnership
with Abraham Lincoln, go off to war at age forty-six, and arrive home in a casket
on the eve of her birthday. And Wayne Dyer, the crusading prosecutor who held
his own in courtroom confrontations with the renowned Clarence Darrow, certainly
left an enviable legacy of legal excellence.
Chapter V introduces the inveterate salesman, Clinton McVey Ladd, a true "man's
man." Chapter IX ("Voyage of the Mayflower") is especially compelling because
of its direct application to the history of the Paddocks. Chapter XXI ("The National
Pastime") introduces dimensions of author Bruce Ladd's lifelong romance with
the game of baseball. |
