Memories:
A Collection

by Frank B. Easton, Jr. and Friends
paperback, 216 pages
Published: 2000
ISBN 1-880849-65-8

Memories: A Collection extends the record of Frank B. Easton, Jr.’s remembrances that he began in his book, As I Recall.... giving readers glimpses into life in a Vermont village during the years of the Great Depression and World War II.
Frank’s own youthful recollections are supplemented with those of both his contemporaries and his younger friends and relatives. This is a collection of stories from ordinary people who went on to do extraordinary things.
Memories is, above all, the story of Frank B. Easton Jr., who started to earn money as a young boy. After he outgrew routine chores he worked on the road shoveling frozen gravel, as
an undertaker’s assistant, also a farm hand and a house painter. He did this to put some cash into the family coffers because during those hard times rural physicians, like Dr. Easton, were often paid in eggs or sides of beef, if at all. Although Frank was very bright, athletic, personable, and showed a great deal of promise, he never complained that economic circumstances prevented him from going to college. His sacrifices made it possible for three of his younger siblings to earn multiple degrees from colleges and universities.
Hard though it may have been at times, Frank and his friends found time to hunt, fish, dance, enjoy cars, and several, including Frank, learned to fly airplanes. What shines through, not only in his stories, but also in those of his friends, is that Frank is and has always been a man of loyalty, integrity, and gentle humor. He has always been there to take care of those he loves: his parents, his family, his friends, and his neighbors.
