The purpose of this chapbook is to do more than strengthen your and others’ respect for – and loyalty towards – that key American credo, our Freedom of Religion.
Certainly, it hopes to counter at least a little the inevitably harsh and fatal admixtures of religion with civil governance so visible beyond our borders – and even now being urged by some here. But beyond that, its intent is to inspire you along with fellow citizens to speak up and to write about the values of Religious Freedom to yourselves and your neighbors. When you do this, that deadly tyranny f mandating one belief system over any or all others (including your own) will be scorned, repudiated, rejected, and its proponents once again confounded by a public outcry.
To prepare yourself, read speeches, papers, books available in the congressional, college, school, and town libraries. On the Web, look up "religious freedom", "freedom of religion", "church and state", and "first amendment". Find, contact, and listen to religious freedom caretakers in institutions, the courts, Congress, administration, and the armed services. Then, wisely speak up for and put down in writing your support of our Founders’ common sense philosophy of mandating for us all a civil governance and not one run by any religion.
Inside are some sources helpful in spotting the views of our Founders on Religious Freedom – those who led that majority of early Americans to see it codified within the Constitution. Follow these sources to these legions of all its sensible proponents. And when these proponents further your belief in your freedom to worship as you choose (or even not worship at all); when they further your views that this American Freedom is central to your own protection and prosperity, even to a more friendly, less violent world – then why not speak up, why not write your own booklet? You, too, can (and should) do it!
